Statement from the National Crime Prevention Council on 2023 FBI Crime Data. Attributed to Executive Director, Paul DelPonte.

Washington, D.C., September 24, 2024  –Violent crime dropped again in the U.S. That is obviously good news, but that alone doesn’t necessarily mean people feel a greater sense of security. A feeling of safety is closely tied to a sense of community. Many Americans see that slipping away. Engaging citizens in their own safety and security is the best way to both reduce crime and make people feel safer.

The same FBI data also show an increase in hate crimes and car theft. Both crimes reduce a sense of community and trust. The real strength of examining the annual crime numbers is to spot trends, not to score political points. Empowering people at the community level to Take A Bite Out Of Crime® should be the goal because that’s the one thing all criminals hate.
